About the Veterans Employment Program

In March 2015, the former NSW Premier made a commitment to establish a program to help an additional 200 veterans find suitable, sustainable and meaningful employment within the NSW Government Sector by 2019. The result of this commitment was the establishment of a dedicated Veterans Employment Program by NSW Veterans Affairs within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC). The Program was launched at NSW Parliament House on 5 May 2016.

The Program is a first of its kind for government in Australia. The methods, approaches and tools are innovative and unique to the context of veterans and the NSW Government Sector. Combined with extensive inter-agency collaboration, the program is leading the way in employment initiatives to support veterans.

Developing the Veterans Employment Program

To develop the VEP, Veterans’ Affairs led research to analyse how Australian Defence Force (ADF) employees’ skills and experience match those required for public sector jobs.

The research found that ADF skills and experience were highly transferrable to government workplaces across a broad range of fields. There are roles in NSW Government to cater to all levels of skill and experience, ranging from entry level to executive positions.

Given approximately 1,500 people separate from the ADF in NSW each year, the NSW Government is committed to capitalising on this large and highly skilled recruitment pool.

Collaboration and Education Campaign

To ensure the program is a success, the NSW Veterans Affairs team are undertaking an internal education and collaboration campaign throughout NSW public sector agencies.

This will ensure recruitment decision makers and human resources influencers within NSW Government agencies are well informed about the skills and attributes of former military personnel and how they can be matched to the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework.

About this Website

The site offers a range of information and tools to assist veterans in identifying suitable employment opportunities for them with NSW Government. There is also a growing set of resources aimed at helping veterans to complete their applications for a role with NSW Government, in accordance with the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework.

Tools include the ADF Rank - NSW Government Grade Match Tool to guide veterans to their equivalent NSW public sector grades, detailed information on the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework, and showcasing of individuals who have successfully made the switch from the ADF to fulfilling careers with the NSW Government.

Veterans are also encouraged to contact the NSW Veterans Affairs team if interested in establishing an informal mentoring relationship with a fellow veteran already working in NSW Government.
