Shine for Kids is recruiting veterans aged 24 years or over to volunteer for its mentoring programs.

Benefits for Young People:

There is strong evidence that volunteering mentoring programs can help promote better life choices to enable a young person's potential.

Other benefits for young people include:

  • development of new skills and increased self-esteem
  • improvement of communication and interpersonal skills
  • increased knowledge for healthy choices
  • ability to build a positive relationship with an adult outside of the family.

Benefits for Mentors:

Volunteering as a mentor provides an opportunity for veterans to utilise and build on leadership skills gained through service. Veteran volunteers provide a positive role model and encourage young people to build the skills and confidence they need to make good choices.

Training and support is provided to mentors throughout the program. Volunteer work is well received in the resumes of job applicants for NSW Government roles and mentors will be provided with a non-military reference.

All prospective mentors will be required to undertake the following:

  • Current NSW Working with Children Check
  • National Police Check
  • Interview with SHINE for Kids
  • Initial two-day training
  • Online Safeguarding Children Training
